Finance and banking are among the happiest jobs in the UK
Workplace happiness is having a bit of a time of it. Burnout rates are at an all-time high, with recent research from Westfield Health, finding that 46 per cent of UK workers are close to burnout.
The “quiet quitting” trend is garnering column inches for a reason: it’s all about checking out from a job you no longer like––let alone love. And with a recent study indicating that two thirds of UK workers saying they are disengaged, the picture begins to coalesce.
Being happy at work matters. Fifty-four percent of employees who took part in the study said their workplace had become unrecognisable thanks to staff turnover, and 49 per cent said fewer people working from the office was their big reason. A decline in team socials was another factor for 43 per cent.
Top 10 happiest
Additionally, Indeed’s Work Happiness Score has found that a third of UK workers are unhappy in their job. While that’s not great news, it does mean that there is a significant proportion of British workers who are getting along just fine.
In fact, the Job Sector Index from commercial property firm Savoy Stewart, found that the finance and banking sectors came in second place on its list of the top 10 happiest – pipped to the post by the childcare sector, which scored the most points for “positive impact on others”, as well as scoring highly for “satisfaction with employee empowerment.”
Public security, the tech sector and the construction and property sectors also scored well when assessed against a range of markers including positive impact on others, career prospects, employee empowerment, work relationships, salary, and toxic culture.
The Job Sector Index found that finance and banking workers feel valued, based on their scores for employee empowerment, which were the highest of all sectors in the ranking. Perhaps unsurprisingly, finance and banking employees rated their remuneration highly – but the sector ranked third worst for mental health.
Happiness for UK workers isn’t solely defined as having a stress-free working life, however. Many people thrive under pressure and Indeed’s Happiness report outlines how not all stress is created equal. It says that people with a “positive” stress mindset cope with stress factors better, and feel happier at work.
This cohort views stress as a challenge to be embraced, moving them to perform better; whereas those with a “negative” stress mindset view stress as harmful, toxic or debilitating.
